This practice was also known as stack ranking, forced distribution, the “vitality curve.” It was more crassly called “rank and yank,” reflecting the ethos of then CEO Jack Welch, who built a reputation for systematically firing low performing employees. Welch's vitality curve applied a 20-70-10 division where 20% of employees are top performers (A players), 70% are in the middle (B players), and 10% are bottom performers (C players). The ”yank” part of the equation involved systematically removing “C players” from the business. The method earned him the name “Neutron Jack” because he got rid of the people but left the buildings intact. Stack ranking employees against clear criteria, supported by broad feedback from the stakeholders they work with, has remained as a staple of good management practice.
