The firm took a more cautious view of the ability for Ulta Beauty ( ULTA ) to sustained mid single-digit comparable sales growth due to increasing competition, aging brand mix, and a normalizing category. "We have viewed Ulta as a share taker in current macro, but see constraints on ULTA's prestige biz (50% sales) due to lack of newness and increasing pressure from Sephora which raises the potential for downward revisions in the NTM due to back half weighted guide," noted analyst Ashley Helgans. Helgans also warned on brand composition issues. "ULTA's moves to strengthen their brand mix have been misdirected toward small unproven brands, while competition (Sephora) has been relentlessly adding zeitgeist emerging brands some of which are exclusives," she highlighted. Jefferies base case on ULTA now assumes comparable sales gradually improve from +1% in Q1, but only reach ~5% growth in the second half of the year vs. the implied guidance from the retailer for +6% to +7% growth.
