The Issaquah, Washington-headquartered warehouse retailer has found that having Costco employees pre-scan shoppers' carts , which allows the customer to simply cash out at an automated pay station, is leading to "an average transaction time of around 8 seconds," CEO Ron Vachris said during the company's recent second quarter 2026 earnings call. "Early results show this is improving the flow of traffic, and we've received great member feedback," he said, according to a transcript of the earnings call from S&P Global Market Intelligence. Costco has not said how many locations have adopted the pre-scanning process or whether it will be deployed at more of its more than 900 warehouses globally in the United States and Canada. But Vachris has referenced the use of "scan and go" in previous calls with investment analysts about the company's quarterly performance.
