Summary Every three months I take an exploratory look how smartphone market share is changing. And every three months I take something of a verbal beating for suggesting that Apple ( AAPL ) might not have the stranglehold on that market that its fans and followers might like to think it has. Apparently I’m a glutton, because I’m getting ready to do it again. Gartner’s recent look at the fourth quarter’s smartphone sales data once again hints that the iPhone – though it never owned a majority of the market – is slipping. And once again, it matters not because Apple is still the only company making any real profits in the smartphone game, but because usage of differing operating systems is the key to this market’s future.
