Pine Point rail bed survey seeks to profile current land use Rail line was decommissioned in 1990s, but has found other uses today The railway line that used to connect Hay River to Pine Point may be gone, but the mark of it remains today as a cleared path through the Boreal forest. The overgrown 80-kilometre long pathway has found countless other uses since the line was shut down 1992, from berry picking to hunting, but is a contaminated site according to Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada. Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada is considering what to do with the area, but before it can do that, it wants to know what it is used for today – and by whom. Consultations are in progress and researchers are already surprised at what they are discovering. "We had no idea that people were actually collecting mushrooms like morels on burnt-out areas near the rail bed.
