Summary The big news of the past week from pipeline giant Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI ) was that it revised upwards its cost estimates for its Trans Mountain pipeline expansion plans. Normally higher costs would spook investors as it may lead to lower returns down the line. However, Kinder Morgan's stock has held up, performing inline with its sector peers (represented by the Alerian MLP index (AMZ)),which have all been drifting lower due to weaker oil prices. KMI data by YCharts Cost are up, but so are tariffs The press release from the company is rather clear -- the total cost for the project is now estimated to be $7.4 billion CAD, up 9% from the prior estimate of $6.8 billion CAD. Kinder Morgan had to offer plenty of concessions to get approval for this project and these obviously raised the price tag.
