By Seeking Profits:In the past few weeks, there has been a significant rout in energy stocks as investors worry about the ramifications of lower oil prices. While some of the selling is justified, large, broad-based sell-offs almost always create opportunities in select names. I believe this to be true in this sell-off, especially because not all energy stocks are equally exposed to oil. This past week, Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE:KMP) reminded investors of that fact by reporting strong quarterly results, and at the end of the day, earnings and cash flow are what really matter for long term investors and stock prices.As an MLP, Kinder Morgan distributes nearly all of its eligible cash flow to investors; distributable cash flow is generally defined as operating cash flow less maintenance cap-ex.
