5 ways tech startups are avoiding IPOs Don’t let the recent strong initial public offerings fool you: Tech startups are still avoiding Wall Street en masse, and there is big money offering them investments to stay private in multiple ways. Last week’s debut of data-center company Switch Inc . SWCH, -4.41% brought in half a billion dollars for the third-largest tech IPO this year, and streaming-video device maker Roku Inc. ROKU, +3.18% saw its valuation double in its first two trading days . They follow more recognizable names that went public earlier this year and have struggled to live up to their initial valuations: Snapchat parent company Snap Inc. SNAP, +11.44% and meal-kit delivery company Blue Apron Holdings APRN, +0.00% . These companies all bravely went forth, where even bigger companies still fear to tread.
