A nationwide shortage of healthcare workers is forcing hospitals to pay more to recruit nurses and technicians. Rival Tenet Healthcare, which raised its full-year forecast on Wednesday, had also flagged the impact from a shortage of clinical staff in the quarter. HCA, the largest for-profit hospital operator in the country, said expenses incurred on staff salaries and benefits rose 16.4% or nearly a billion dollars to $7.09 billion in the quarter. Shares were down 5.5% at $245.56 in early trading. Despite the labour pressures, HCA reported a rise in profit driven by higher volumes of patients requiring costlier treatments due to the Delta variant as well as sale of four of its hospitals in Georgia. Patient volumes rebounded across most segments, with outpatient surgeries and emergency room visits rising 6.4% and 31.2%, respectively, on a same-facility basis.
