Summary As is most often the case, a winning design or idea will most often involve sacrificing something in order to get some other advantage. In the case of the Tesla ( TSLA ) model 3, the advantage it gained in performance efficiency and price by opting for a permanent magnet motor was considered a necessary decision, meant to facilitate the obtainment of its main goal, namely get a mass-produced EV on the market, with a decent range, for a starting price of $35,000. One of the downsides to this approach is that it needs neodymium, which is a rare earth metal, mainly mined and refined in China. Back when the decision was taken to go with such a design, it may not have seemed like a major problem, but given the current trade relationship between the U.S. and China, it seems that the decision may have been a big risk.
