Closed-End Funds: Stock/Bond Mixes These portfolios are, in old-fashioned terminology, balanced. They are intermediate between equity and fixed-income, either owning convertible bonds or combining stocks and bonds. The ones with handsome performance records tend to trade at a premium price. That, along with a good dividend, translates into a high cost of ownership. Thus, funds with A grades for both past results and cost effectivenss are scarce. Two exceptions to the general rule are Cohen & Steers REIT & Preferred Income, rated A+/A, and Tri-Continental, rated A/A+. The Cohen & Steers fund has done well owning such real estate investment trusts as American Tower, which leases space to cell phone companies. Tri-Continental is an ancient fund that owns a lot of blue chips (like Alphabet and Verizon Communications) and just enough bonds to not be classified as a pure equity play.
