Companies back bill targeting robocalls that consumer advocate says won’t stop calls Companies and trade groups are supporting a bipartisan bill that targets robocalls, but the legislation doesn’t look like it will end those unwanted automated calls, with other measures introduced this year promising to do more. The Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence (TRACED) Act tackles spoofing, which is when robocallers trick your phone’s caller ID to get you to answer. Out of all bills rolled out in Congress this year that target robocalls, it’s “getting the most traction because it does something that is clearly needed but also is already happening,” said Margot Saunders, a senior attorney at the nonprofit National Consumer Law Center, which represents low-income people before the Federal Communications Commission on robocall matters.
