Fed Chair Powell Faces Task of Saying Something About Nothing There probably won't be much to talk about on Wednesday following the conclusion of a two-day Federal Reserve meeting in Washington. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell will have to talk about it anyway. Few investors expect the central bank to make any changes at the meeting to U.S. benchmark interest rates, currently set in a range between 2.25% and 2.5%. But Powell, who took over at the central bank last year after being nominated by President Donald Trump, plans to host a press conference after the decision is announced, under a new policy of facing reporters -- a gaggle of most of the nation's top economic journalists -- every time the central bank meets. Previously, when no press conference was held, investors had to scrutinize curt statements from the monetary-policy committee and then wait several weeks for minutes of the meeting, where the substance of the closed-door discussions was revealed.
