Brands are caught between a retailer and a marketplace. Some retailers are feeling so threatened by Amazon that they are banning partner brands from selling there. For other retailers, success on Amazon is a marker of demand for a product, and they specifically seek out brands that are already successful online. For brands caught in the middle the choice of whether to sell their product on Amazon or not, it can have major consequences for their bottom line. Amazon isn’t the only ecommerce platform that stores take issue with. On August 27, Walmart launched a Premium Outdoor Store microsite. Within a week, one third of the site’s 50 well-known brands left the platform over concerns that other retailers would drop their brand if they continued participating. If that were the end of the story, brands would have an easy choice: sell at major retailers, or sell on Amazon. They could look at sales projections for both options and make a call based on their brand’s goals.
