“Christmas, if you look at a top-line point of view, will look better because of inflated dollars than it actually is,” McMillon said, speaking at the Morgan Stanley Global Consumer and Retail Conference. “If you look at units and the quality of the breadth of what sells, as a retailer, we won't feel great about the quality of this Christmas.” As the largest retailer in the U.S., Walmart ‘s insights have long been considered important leading gauges into consumer trends. McMillon's comments seem at odds with initial reports following Black Friday weekend, which suggest that Americans spent a healthy amount.
