Stocks struggle for direction as solid retail data offset tepid Walmart earnings U.S. stocks were tentatively higher Thursday as both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average struggled to hold key levels at 2,700 and 25,000, respectively. Solid economic data offset underwhelming earnings from Walmart Inc. to drive trading sentiment. Investors digested developments surrounding Britain’s convoluted effort to leave the European Union and comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for clues on monetary policy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.49% shed 46 points, or 0.2%, to 25,035, while the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.68% edged up a point to 2,703. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +1.23% added 30 points, or 0.4%, to 7,166.
