A new coronavirus variant discovered in South Africa, dubbed Omicron , caused stocks to fall sharply in a holiday-shortened trading session on Friday. The S&P 500 index dropped 2.2% for the week, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 3.5%. Knee-jerk reactions were abundant.
