Summary On a shopping trip one day last week, I visited my local Target (NYSE: TGT ) and Costco (NASDAQ: COST ). The stores could not have had more different vibes, and this outing was typical of what I've witnessed in recent years. I can't lie: Such experiences have helped shape my opinion of both companies. Here is the Target check-out area, as photographed March 23 at 11:35 a.m.: One lone customer was checking out at one of several open registers. The store itself was nearly deserted, as you can see from this photo of the main aisle, taken as I stepped through the door: Yeah, but come on. It was late-morning on a Thursday. Of course nobody was shopping at Target. Kids were in school, adults were working, people had more important things to do. Why, there probably was hardly anybody shopping anywhere, right? Well, just a half-hour later and one mile away, here was the scene at Costco, as customers streamed down the main aisle:
