Airline shares fell sharply Monday after military strikes in the Middle East disrupted regional air travel and grounded flights at several major hubs, including Dubai. American Airlines ( NASDAQ:AAL ), United Airlines ( NASDAQ:UAL ) and Delta Air Lines ( NYSE:DAL ) each slid more than 5% in early trading, while Alaska Air Group ( NYSE:ALK ) fell about 6%. Ryanair Holdings (RYAAY) and Joby Aviation ( NYSE:JOBY ) dropped roughly 4%. Flight- tracking service FlightAware reported thousands of cancellations and delays across the region. Airspace over parts of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar appeared largely empty on tracking maps Sunday, reflecting widespread operational suspensions. Carriers also faced pressure from rising fuel costs. Brent crude futures climbed about 8% to $78.77 a barrel, and some analysts suggested prices could move higher if tensions persist.
