"I approached American about exploring a combination because I thought we could do something incredible for customers together," Kirby said in a statement. "I was hoping to pitch that story to American, but they declined to engage and instead responded by publicly closing the door. And without a willing partner, something this big simply can't get done." American Airlines CEO Robert Isom had rejected the proposal, calling it "bad for customers, bad for the industry, and then, ultimately, that would be bad for American Airlines," according to Bloomberg . American declined to comment on Kirby's Monday statement. According to Reuters , the merger concept first surfaced during a late-February White House meeting between Kirby and Trump — a session that had been arranged to address the future of Washington's Dulles airport. Trump made clear he was opposed to the idea. "I don't like having them merge," he told CNBC , adding that both carriers were already performing well on their own
