Cook will stay on through the summer to help with the handoff and continue some policy work for Apple. He has led the company since 2011, guiding its move into wearables, headsets and services while lifting its market value to about $4 trillion from about $350 billion. Ternus, 51, joined Apple in 2001 and has overseen hardware engineering. In a statement, he said he was grateful for the chance to carry Apple forward and credited both Cook and Steve Jobs for his career. Apple also said board chair Arthur Levinson will become lead independent director on Sept. 1, and Johny Srouji will take the role of chief hardware officer immediately.
