The money comes from a $773 million settlement Albertsons reached with multiple states for their role in the opioid epidemic. The settlement covers Albertsons' conduct as a pharmacy chain that dispensed opioids during the height of the crisis. Albertson's operates Albertsons and Safeway grocery stores in Oregon. “Every dollar from this settlement is going toward helping Oregonians recover – treatment, services, and support for the families and communities hit hardest by this crisis,” said Rayfield. “Oregon pharmacies have a legal and moral obligation to be part of the solution, not the problem.” The grocery chain will be required to pay Oregon the funds over the course of nine years. Rayfield said that while all parties agreed to the total amount to be paid, negotiations are ongoing that could decide how Albertsons operates its pharmacies going forward.
