Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has asked food manufacturers phase out artificial dyes by the end of 2026 but the industry will need to be vigilant to avoid fraud, according to comments made at Food Dive's virtual Food Manufacturing Summit , which was co-hosted with Manufacturing Dive and Supply Chain Dive. The request is “spurring unprecedented demand for natural colors that suppliers are struggling to meet,” said Kevin Kenny, senior advisor at compliance firm FoodChain ID . “That's leading to a surge in fraudulent dyes and ingredients.” In addition to Kennedy's request, several states are considering more than 200 pieces of legislation to ban “certain additives or dyes,” Food Dive said. “We've seen quite an increase in the amount of food fraud right now,” Kenny said at the summit. “All of these things that you're trying to do in moving toward healthy or natural gives an opportunity for economic adulteration.” To make current supplies go farther, suppliers are “mixing
