Two major retailers also closed logistics and fulfillments centers in their restructurings. Consumers are among the unfortunate victims of closings, as they see their favorite stores go dark. Several department store chains closed locations in 2025 and in the first month of 2026. Macy's said it would close 14 store locations in 11 states this year as part of its “Bold New Chapter” restructuring plan, which it launched in 2024, Axios reported. Marshall's closed two stores this year, located in Los Angeles and San Jose, Calif., before Jan. 5. Other department stores that closed stores last year included JCPenney and Nordstrom. When a retailer shuts down several department stores, it's no surprise if regional fulfillment or distribution centers also close down or consolidate. With a reduction of the need for inventory, these warehouse facilities are often no longer necessary. After closing 50 stores in 2024, 66 stores in 2025, and earmarking 14 more stores for closing in
