Shares of Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. gained 2.1% in trading on Monday morning after the drugmaker announced it plans to conduct a Phase 3 trial testing Ultomiris in patients with severe forms of COVID-19. The open-label, randomized, controlled clinical study aims to enroll 270 patients hospitalized with severe pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome in May. The drug has previously been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat two rare diseases. Alexion's stock is down 3.4% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 has dropped 11.0%.
