Commerce Department numbers are proof of this trend: ecommerce sales in the third quarter of 2025 grew 5.1% over 3Q24 (1.9% sequentially), with total retail sales increasing 4.1% (1.5% sequentially). Ecommerce accounted for around 16.4% of total U.S. retail sales. A point to note here is that consumers are increasingly blending their online and offline shopping experiences, so this distinction may soon become irrelevant. As a corollary, it is those retailers that have the capacity to sell through both channels that will be able to compete tomorrow.
