Arista Networks Inc. shares are falling 7.7% in Friday morning action in the wake of a double-downgrade that has them pacing S&P 500 index laggards. Rosenblatt Securities analyst Mike Genovese cut his rating on the networking company's stock to sell from buy, warning that the market could be too optimistic about Arista's ethernet prospects as relates to artificial-intelligence spending — especially as Nvidia Corp. becomes an ever-stronger player. "Arista's multiple may shrink as investors realize its AI opportunity is smaller than most expect and is unlikely to drive material upside to estimates," Genovese wrote. But Evercore ISI's Amit Daryanani defended the stock in his own report. "We continue to expect Arista to be the leader in AI switching and for a host of reasons expect ethernet to be a larger [percent] of back-end network over time," he wrote.
