According to PitchBook's 2025 Annual European PE Breakdown report, the median exit holding times for PE investments fell from 6.6 years in 2024 to 5.8 years in 2025, having been on an upwards trend since 2020, when the median holding period was5.1 years. Some sectors saw an even bigger drop. The median holding period for deals in the energy sector fell 36%, from 7.7 years in 2024 to 4.9 years, representing the shortest median hold time. Some major exits in the sector last year included I Squared Capital' s €2.5 billion (about $3 billion) exit of Irish energy utility Energia Group to Ardian in October. Oaktree Capital Management also exited OEG Energy Group to Apollo Global Management in March at a headline valuation of more than $1 billion. Holding periods in other sectors—including materials and resources, business products and services, and healthcare—have also fallen since their peaks in 2024.
