The value of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity fell by 8pc to $217.2bn (£162.3) in 2025, according to a Mergermarket report, down from $237.3bn in 2024. By contrast, dealmaking volumes rose by 18pc in France and 23pc in Italy, according to a study of the top 20 mergers and acquisitions markets in Europe. After a large number of listed businesses were taken private last year, there were expectations of further dealmaking into 2025. However, Donald Trump's tariffs and the uncertainty surrounding Rachel Reeves's Budget led many companies to put their takeover plans on hold. Lucinda Guthrie, the head of Mergermarket, said: “At the beginning of the year, everyone was talking about animal spirits and how M&A was going to boom, and last year as well. “In the UK, we had a lot of uncertainty around the Budget.
