The workers who walked out then joined fellow union members in chanting and picketing outside the business on the afternoon of March 26. The action was organized by the United Here Local 11 labor union in Phoenix, which sent a letter to the state Occupational Safety and Health Division on March 26 for an inspection of the site after a worker was hospitalized. Victoria Stahl, spokesperson for the union, said workers are demanding a fully functioning air conditioning system. Previous efforts to fix the system last summer didn't work, they said. Vanessa Martinez, one of the workers who walked off her job, said she had felt dizzy and nauseous for days before she left work on March 20 and checked herself into a hospital. Workers at the restaurant interviewed by The Arizona Republic said the heat inside the Panda Express kitchen has been unbearable during the unprecedented triple-digit temperatures this March in Phoenix.
