M&S's Christmas food success offsets falling fashion sales [Yahoo! Finance]

The business said it was the fastest-growing grocer in the 13 weeks to Dec 27, hailing a 6.6pc jump in food sales over the period. However, it also revealed a 2.5pc dip in fashion, home and beauty sales, which M&S said was partly driven by the continued fallout from a devastating cyberattack last spring M&S was only able to bring its website back online in June, six weeks after the hack, and has previously warned that the impact of the incident would continue for some time. The retailer said the weaker fashion performance also reflected lower high street footfall owing to a weaker economy, as bosses pointed to “fragile consumer confidence and milder weather”. It follows figures from Sensormatic, which suggested high street visits were down 13pc year-on-year on Dec 23, typically one of the busiest Christmas shopping days of the year.
