Canada's ambitious plan to bolster its Arctic presence and revitalize its domestic marine industry reached a critical milestone this year with the official start of construction on two new, powerful polar icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). The twin projects – a heavy polar icebreaker being constructed at Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards in British Columbia, and the Polar Max being built through an international partnership by Chantier Davie Canada Inc. (CDCI) – represent the single largest investment in the CCG fleet and a tangible assertion of Canadian sovereignty in increasingly strategic northern waters. The new vessels, slated for delivery by the early 2030s, are designed to be among the most powerful icebreakers in the world, enabling the CCG to operate at higher latitudes and for longer periods than ever before.
