Shares of American Express Co. rose 1.6% in premarket trading Friday, after the credit card and travel services company reported first-quarter profit that beat expectations, although revenue fell short. Net income fell to $367 million, or 41 cents a share, from $1.55 billion, or $1.80 a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding non-recurring items, such as a build up in reserves amid a deterioration in the outlook for the global economy amid the coronavirus pandemic, adjusted earnings per share came to $1.98, above the FactSet consensus of $1.46. Revenue fell 1% to $10.31 billion, below the FactSet consensus of $10.71. Consumer services revenue rose 4%, while commercial services revenue was flat and merchant and network services revenue fell 10%.
