U.S. stocks rose at the start of trade Friday as investors took comfort in rising oil prices, which were set to advance for the third straight day after a record slide earlier in the week that took a key oil-futures contract into negative territory, and as Dow component American Express Co. [S: AXP] reported first-quarter earnings that beat expectations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 138 points, or 0.6% to 23,649, the S&P 500 index gained 13 points, or 0.5% to trade at 2,810 and the Nasdaq Composite index advanced 15 points, or 0.2% to about 8,509. Markets were also taking comfort in news that Congress passed another stimulus package, totaling $484 billion that will replenish a small-business lending program, provide aid to hospitals and fund coronavirus testing efforts. American Express shares rose 2% early Friday after the credit-card and travel-services company reported quarterly profit that beat expectations.
