Dame Emma Walmsley, the outgoing chief executive of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) , said it was delusional to suggest Britain could become a competitor to the US. She lauded America as key to the group's future growth. “It's more than half of GSK's global turnover today,” she said of the US. “It's still the leading market in the world in terms of the launches of new drugs and vaccines. It's still, probably alongside China … the best market in the world to do business development. “No one should be deluded that the UK is going to be a massive scale market, a domestic market, but it can be an exporter of innovation in life sciences.” Dame Emma said GSK, which spends £1bn developing new drugs in the UK every year, is preparing to invest $30bn (£23bn) in the US by the end of this decade.
