Compared with defense mega-contractors such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies, Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings is not a big company. With 5,000 employees, annual sales of $2 billion and a market cap in the $3 billion range, AJRD (its stock symbol) barely makes it into the ranks of America’s top-fifty military contractors as calculated by Defense News.And yet each of those three top-ranked contractors would find its operations hobbled if Aerojet products were suddenly unavailable. The reason is that AJRD specializes in rocket, missile and space-system propulsion, an area in which sector consolidation has left only two major domestic sources (the other being Northrop Grumman).
