New York (CNN Business) Corporate America is getting hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. Many businesses, particularly retailers and restaurants , are closed. The airline , hospitality and auto industries have ground to a halt. With that in mind, earnings for the first quarter — and the remainder of 2020 — are likely to be bleak. From a markets perspective, stocks have rebounded so far in April on hopes that the death toll from coronavirus may be slowing. But have investors — and analysts — failed to factor in just how bad things will get for earnings and the economy ?According to estimates from FactSet, earnings for S&P 500 companies are expected to fall 10% in the first quarter compared to a year ago. That would be the worst performance since a more than 15% decline in the third quarter of 2009
