At the open: TSX rises on hopes of coronavirus spread slowing Canada’s main stock index opened higher on Monday as investors drew comfort from a slowdown in coronavirus-related deaths and new cases in many parts of the world. At 9:37 a.m. ET, the Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index was up 366.47 points, or 2.83%, at 13,304.77. The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart on Monday as signs of a slowdown in coronavirus-related deaths bolstered investors sentiment, offsetting lower oil prices. Stocks globally rose as the death toll from the virus slowed across major European nations including France and Italy. Canada runs a current account deficit and is a major producer of commodities, including oil, so the loonie tends to be sensitive to the global flow of trade and capital. U.S. crude oil futures were down 3.5% at $27.35 a barrel after Saudi Arabia and Russia delayed a meeting to discuss output cuts that could help to reduce global oversupply. The Canadi
