We don’t need all the airplanes that we have,” CEO Gary Kelly told investors. “It’s hard for me to argue to [Boeing] that we’re being damaged by MAX delays here in April, to be brutally honest.”The $428m compensation is just over half of the $828m that Southwest estimates it lost in operating profit in 2019. Southwest and Boeing agreed last December for undisclosed MAX compensation covering the grounding through December 31, 2019. Payments were made only this year, Southwest’s accounts show.Compensation for losses incurred since January 1, 2020 have not been announced but Kelly expects discussions to continue.“We have a great relationship with Boeing. I think arguably we’re their best customer around the world,” Kelly said. “I have every reason to believe it will continue to work very well together.”Southwest says it is directing the MAX compensation towards its cash flow so it can offset aircraft purchases.Initially Southwe
