But that doesn't mean investors have to avoid all retailers. RBC Capital Markets analyst Steven Shemesh takes a look at consumer data on Wednesday, writing that the “consumer environment has continued to deteriorate.” He points to four factors informing his caution. First, he believes Walmart (ticker: WMT) and Target TGT ) are pushing back on price increases from suppliers—perhaps even using shelf space as a cudgel to keep them in check. Yet they are also raising prices themselves: His basket of top-selling goods indicates prices have risen about 7.5% and 11.1% at Walmart and Target, respectively, since January.
