Investors will be looking out for clues on banks' earnings resilience as well as on the potential impacts of expected interest-rate cuts and an economic soft landing, while analysts expect lenders to boost returns to shareholders. Here is what you need to know: WHAT TO WATCH: Advertisement --SHAREHOLDER RETURNS: European banks are expected to declare final dividends amounting to 56 billion euros ($60.96 billion) with their fourth-quarter results, which will be a chance for many of them to restart share buybacks, Bank of America analysts wrote in a research note this week. BofA forecasts European banks could return EUR38 billion through buybacks by the end of the year, coming on top of an expected EUR76 billion in dividends for 2024. Meanwhile, Berenberg analysts see total shareholder returns--which include dividends and changes in stock prices--of 30% to 35% as possible during the next two years, even without investors turning more optimistic about the sector.
