The 2018 closings of bankrupt Toys “R” Us stores have led retailers including Target, Walmart and Amazon to double down on toy sales, but it looks like the shift in where toys are sold hasn’t erased the challenges facing the industry. One clear example: Target’s holiday sales results. The Minneapolis retailer’s stock slumped 7% on Wednesday after its holiday sales missed mark. While demand for Target’s apparel, beauty products and essential items picked up, toys, electronics and some home products—about one-third of Target’s holiday season sales—disappointed. Toys, “after two strong holiday seasons,” saw flat sales, even though Target continued to gain market share in the category, Target CEO Brian Cornell said in a blog post Wednesday. Target’s toy performance was worth noting and highlights industry outlook because the discount retailer plays a key role in Toys “R” Us’s attempt to revive its brand.
