Picking commodity winners at this stage of what could become a global economic slowdown courtesy of the China coronavirus is risky business but two steel-making minerals are starting to attract support; iron ore and coking coal. The theory supporting the investment case for iron ore and coking coal is that China is likely to resort to a fresh round of economic stimulus to try and overcome the effects of a countrywide slowdown that last week led to an all-time low in the important manufacturing purchasing managers’ index. Steel is always a winner when the Chinese Government hits the jump-start button which invariably includes a fresh round of big-ticket infrastructure projects such as railways and bridges.
