The market for “traditional” American art has been languishing in the doldrums for quite a number of years. Two decades ago, Sotheby’s and Christie’s would pack their American Art sales catalogues with 200-250 works of art. This season, they are offering merely 83 and 76 respectively. Imagine my surprise, then, at seeing Edward Hopper’s name in the headlines. 48 hours ago at Christie's, NY, his 1929 oil Chop Suey fetched $92 million, becoming the most expensive traditional American painting Christie’s has ever sold. In the same sale, it even beat out the most expensive Willem de Kooning ever auctioned- ( Woman as Landscape [1954-1955] , which sold for $69 million).
