But the dynamics of the contest appear to have shifted in recent weeks. Hassett was once seen as the frontrunner but Trump last week expressed reluctance at nominating him, expressing worry that it would deprive the administration of one of its most powerful messengers on the economy. “I actually want to keep you where you are, if you want to know the truth,” Trump told Hassett during a White House event. It was not clear if those remarks signaled a shift in the internal deliberations, however, or an offhand remark by the president.
