While investment giant BlackRock is now synonymous with the world's first Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF), the origin of the product that launched a multi-trillion-dollar global industry is Bay Street, Toronto, underscoring Canada's history of financial innovation. The fund, now known as the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index ETF, was conceived and launched in 1990 by the Toronto Stock Exchange. Initially dubbed the Toronto 35 Index Participation Unit (TIPS 35), it was designed to let investors buy a single unit that tracked the performance of the largest companies on the TSE 35 Index. It was a transformative initiative that allowed investors access to broad market diversification with the flexibility of a single stock and laid the foundation for what has become a global investment phenomenon.
