Dozens of concerned citizens, community advocates and elected officials gathered at Pensacola Beach Saturday for a press conference opposing the Trump administration's new oil drilling plan , which includes a huge swath of the Eastern Gulf A map released Nov. 20, 2025 by the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management includes a proposal to extend oil exploration and drilling opportunities east from the Alabama line across waters extending the length of the entire Panhandle of Florida. The Eastern Gulf, which was long considered off-limits to offshore drilling, includes an important military aquatic test range. Christian Wagley, a Healthy Gulf representative for Florida, told the crowd this is the greatest threat to the Florida Gulf Coast from offshore drilling in the last 30 years. “Drilling threatens our tourism industry, it threatens military testing and training and the thousands of jobs that support it," Wagley said.
