The oil giant confirmed on Wednesday that it was selling a majority stake in the lubricants company to Stonepeak, a New York-based investment firm. It is the biggest sale by BP in 12 years and comes as the company is in the midst of a major leadership shake-up Castrol, founded 126 years ago, became a household name through its sponsorship of motor sports, and a recognisable green, red and white logo. The company's livery was famously plastered over racing cars and motorcycles as well as garages up and down the country. It was started by Charles Wakefield, who mixed vegetable oils with other lubricants to make a product able to handle the higher temperatures of new engines in the early 20th century. This also gave Castrol's oils a distinctive smell that became beloved by petrolheads. The company's products have been used by cars that broke land-speed records, the aircraft that made the first transatlantic flight and even by Nasa's Curiosity rover on Mars more recently. B
