When the Pantone Color Institute chose white as its 2026 Color of the Year, the backlash was predictable—on several fronts. Some cultural cognoscenti believe the choice is boring, staid, a literal “nothing” option that strips color and interest from culture. Did Skin Tones Figure Into Pantone's White Choice? Others believe that Pantone is inadvertently veering into politics—as a December 4 Vanity Fair headline states: “And the 2026 Pantone Color of the Year Is…White? Maybe DEI is really over.” Pantone's narrative about its selection, named Cloud Dancer, points to simplicity, relaxation and disconnection from overstimulated lives. The shade, balanced between cool and warm tones, is considered a “blank slate” and “blank canvas” by the company.
