Fundamentally, the company's corporate strategy has shifted into new product markets and cost-cutting. Cigarette sales are evidently facing headwinds. Early signs are that new product markets have delivered robust growth. However, a pivot from its core model means BTI could soon be a thesis trade and not a staple. Given the shift in the company's risk-return profile, I no longer see British American Tobacco as a stable overweight allocation. I thus lower my conviction to market-weight. As a separate matter, British American Tobacco has outperformed Altria since mid-2025. That said, capital structure-based return metrics and valuation multiples arguably favour Altria.
